FR: V.O. est un sextet basé à Bruxelles, dont les membres n’ont cessé de faire fourmiller la scène belge actuelle, sur albums, mais également dans des spectacles de danse, théâtre et des films. A sa tête, on trouve l’homme-orchestre Boris Gronemberger (e.a. ex-Françoiz Breut, ex-Raymondo) entouré fidèlement de ses lieutenants d’exception Cédric Castus (e.a. Castus, ex-Raymondo), Frédéric Renaux (e.a. Castus, ex-Raymondo), Aurélie Muller (e.a. The Tellers, ex-Melon Galia, ex-Soy un Caballo), Ludovic Bouteligier (e.a.Le Yéti, ex-Major Deluxe), Frank Baya (e.a. Mièle, ex-Françoiz Breut).

Facetté avec rigueur par des artisans qui cherchent à explorer toutes les subtilités de leurs instruments, ‘On Rapids’ le troisième album du groupe après ‘Pictures’ et ‘Obstacles’ (parus respectivement en 2005 et 2008 sur Matamore) et le premier à incorporer le français et sans aucun doute celui qui fera date. Sur des bases déjà solidement ancrées dans le microcosme musical, le choix de John McEntire (Tortoise) pour assurer l’enregistrement et le mix arrivait comme une évidence. Le projet fut scellé en 20 jours dans son studio Soma de Chicago, laps de temps nécessaire aux deux parties pour s’apprivoiser, se comprendre, et assurer le meilleur rendu possible.

Portés par des ponctuations de cuivres, par une batterie qui joue la carte de la subtilité et une signature vocale indéniable, les onze morceaux qui composent le disque s’architecturent en couches rythmiques contrastées, flirtent avec le vertige harmonique mais ne cèdent jamais à la facilité. Cette richesse de composition évidente n’enlève en rien l’impression d’être ici face à un univers authentiquement pop, farouchement lumineux, à la manière de ces chambres à ciel ouvert esquissées par Robert Wyatt, Brian Wilson ou encore Jim O’Rourke.

Jugez par vous-même, laissez-vous porter par le flux jazzy et la tension nouvelle, explorez jusqu’au tréfonds cette sensation d’enivrement, aspirez sans reprendre votre souffle trop rapidement. ‘On rapids’ est un album à la lucidité contagieuse, on vous aura prévenus.

Carefully crafted by ever exploring musicians, On Rapids is V.O.’s third album (after Pictures and Obstacles, released in 2005 and 2008 on Matamore Recordings), the first one to welcome songs in french, and undoubtedly their best so far. The legendary John McEntire was chosen for the recording and the mixing of the record, which took place in his Soma Studio in Chicago. The process took 20 days, the adequate time for both parties to get to know and understand each other, and operate together on the highest level possible.
Driven by punctuating horn accents, a subtle drum play and a characteristic vocal signature, these eleven song evolve in contrasted ryhmic patterns and flirt with the harmonic vertigo, never taking the simplistic path. Yet, these elaborate compositions remain purely pop and luminous, echoing Robert Wyatt, Brian Wilson or Jim O’Rourke.

Hear for yourself, and let your mind float to this intoxicating tense jazzy feel. Be warned, On Rapids is an album filled with contagious lucidity.
